About Carnegie Mellon University
First envisioned in 1900 by steel magnate and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, Carnegie Mellon University has steadily built upon its foundations of excellence and innovation to become one of America's leading universities. Consistently ranked as a top-25 institution, Carnegie Mellon is world-renowned for its unique approach to education and research. Students become experts in fields ranging from business, the fine arts and computer science to humanities, the sciences, and engineering. Whether students are in a lab, classroom or studio, left-brain and right-brain thinking unite within a collaborative, hands-on setting. The university's unique approach to education - giving students the opportunity to become experts in their chosen field while studying a broad range of course work across disciplines - creates leaders and problem-solvers for the changing marketplace of today and tomorrow. Carnegie Mellon encourages students to think in new ways and the academic options are as varied as the students who pursue them.

| Early Admission |
| Early Admission Name |
Early Decision I and II |
| Web Site |
http://www.cmu.edu/admission |
| Application Deadline |
Monday December 1, 2008 |
| Description |
Early Decision is for students who declare Carnegie Mellon as their first choice. This plan is a binding agreement; admitted students are expected to enroll. Carnegie Mellon will meet the full demonstrated need with a combination of grants, loans, and work-study as calculated by the university for all students admitted under Early Decision. A student applying under Early Decision can only apply to one college. Students have the choice of applying to the College of Engineering, Computer Science, Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Business, or Sciences.
The application deadline for Early Decision I is November 1 (not available for drama, composition, flute, voice, or BHA/BSA *see special application procedure on our website www.cmu.edu/admission). Students applying for the Fine Arts (Music, Art, Design, and Architecture) can only apply November 1 since their Regular Decision deadline is December 1. The application deadline for Early Decision II is December 1 (not available for architecture, art, design, drama, music, or BHA/BSA). Candidates are notified of a decision by December 15 (for Early Decision I) and January 15 (for Early Decision II). Regular Decision is January 1 (except Art, Design, Architecture, and Music which is December 1).
A student will indicate on the Common Application (www.commonapp.org) that he/she is applying for either Early Decision I or Early Decision II. There is no preference for either. They are essentially the same plan but only two different dates. However, we do not guarantee to meet full need for students who are deferred or denied admission under Early Decision and later admitted under Regular Decision.
To answer questions about financial aid for students considering Early Decision please call 412-268-2082. There is an early estimate form to calculate the demonstrated need and gives a good estimate of financial aid available for the student from Carnegie Mellon. |
