What is a scholarship? A scholarship is a form of financial
assistance which does not require a student to repay
the allocated funds and is usually based on academic
achievement, family background, or personal activities.
There are hundreds of scholarship opportunities available
to Ventures Scholars. Some scholarships are specifically
for underrepresented and first-generation college bound
students, while others are for the general public. The
following sites provide information about scholarship
opportunities and suggestions for accessing these scholarships.

This database describes more than $4 million in scholarships,
with details about eligibility, application deadlines
and contact information. Although it cannot track all
of the scholarships available through the almost 38,000
local unions in the United States, it does include the
major scholarship programs and is a good place to start
a search for financial aid for higher education.

Applicants must submit an essay covering the following
topic: "When, if ever, does a person have the right
to end his or her own life?" In responding to this question,
you must make reference to one book that has had a significant

be looking for well-crafted essays that use correct
spelling and good grammar. Essay lengths must be at

The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships
program is to further international understanding and
friendly relations among people of different countries.
The program sponsors several types of scholarships for
undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified
professionals pursuing vocational studies.

Indian College Fund
Through our scholarships for American Indian college
students and our support of America's tribally controlled
colleges and universities, we are giving hope to, and
creating better lives for, generations of Native American
students and their families and communities.
American
Indian Endowed Scholarship
The American Indian Endowed Scholarship program helps
financially needy students with close ties to a Native
American community to pursue undergraduate and graduate
studies. Scholarship money comes from interest generated
through an endowment funded by private contributions
and the state. Students can use the scholarships at
public colleges and universities and accredited independent
colleges, universities and career schools in Washington.
American
Indian Science and Engineering Society
AISES administers a variety of scholarships that target
American Indian/Alaskan Natives.
American
Psychological Association (APA) Scholarships and Fellowships
Some of these scholarship/fellowship opportunities target
undergraduate students interested in psychology.
Americorps
AmeriCorps provides opportunities for more than 70,000
Americans each year to give intensive service to their
communities and country through three programs: AmeriCorps*State
and National, AmeriCorps*VISTA, and AmeriCorps*NCCC
(National Civilian Community Corps). AmeriCorps members
recruit, train, and supervise community volunteers,
tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach
computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school
programs, help communities respond to disasters, and
build the capacity of nonprofit groups to become self-sustaining,
among many other activities. In exchange for a year
of full-time service, AmeriCorps members earn an education
award of $4,725 that can be used to pay for college
or graduate school, or to pay back qualified student
loans.

Provides a list of scholarships, fellowships and postdoctoral
awards. It is color coded so you can determine which
scholarship opportunities are for undergraduate or graduate

American
Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation Scholarship
Awards
Available to minority students pursuing an undergraduate
degree full-time in occupational safety, health, or
environment. Must be a U.S. citizen and have a minum
3.25 GPA. Recommendation by a safety faculty member
required. ASSE is the oldest and largest professional
safety organization. Its members manage, supervise and
consult on safety, health, and environmental issues
in industry, insurance, government and education.

Film, Writing Scholarships/Competitions List
A monthly newsletter (via email or paper) with several
hundred announcements (every month!) listing art contests
& competitions, art scholarships & grants, juried exhibitions,
art jobs & internships, call for entries/proposals/papers,
writing & photo contests, residencies, design & architecture
competitions, auditions, casting calls, fellowships,
festivals, funding, and other opportunities (including
some that take place on the web) for artists, art educators
and art students of all ages.
Arts
Recognition and Talent Search Scholarship Program
Cash Awards, Scholarships, and Presidential Scholars
in the Arts Awards for 2005-2006 high school seniors
and other 17 and 18 year-old artists in the disciplines
of Dance, Film and Video, Jazz, Music, Photography,
Theater, Visual Arts, Voice and Writing. During ARTS

Scholarship Foundation
More than 50 astronauts from the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo,
Skylab, and Shuttle programs are helping the United
States retain its world leadership in science and technology

To date, the foundation has awarded more than $2 million

Parents in a growing number of cities and states have
access to privately financed programs that support school
choice by offering students partial scholarships.

The Black Student Fund awards tuition grants, in conjunction
with our Member Schools, to black children of modest

Scholarship
Scholarships to qualified students who are enrolled
or planning to participate in a college, university
or graduate school program during the spring/summer/fall
2005 term. Students who apply must be a United States
citizen or permanent resident with a minimum 2.5 Grade
Point Average. In addition, students applying are required
to write a 250 to 300 word essay called "What Is The

Study Abroad Scholarships
IES is committed to providing opportunities for students
of color who have been traditionally under-represented
on study abroad programs. As part of this effort, special
scholarships and financial aid are available and we
encourage all students who qualify to apply for this
assistance. A guaranteed $2,000 scholarship will be
awarded as follows: $1,500 credit toward the IES program
fee; PLUS $500 toward the purchase of an overseas airline
ticket for the IES program (upon receipt of a valid,
overseas airline ticket receipt).

Scholarship Fund
HSF offers a variety of scholarship programs for students
at different points in their academic careers. However,
each HSF-administered scholarship is different, and
many have varying requirements; be sure to consult all
of the guidelines and requirements for the specific
programs to which you plan to apply.
Historically
Black College & University Scholarships
To be eligible, you must attend an HBCU that is a Member
or Associate member of the IES consortium that transfers
at least 75% of home school aid to IES.
Holocaust
Remembrance Scholarships
The Holocaust Remembrance Project is a national essay
contest for high school students that is designed to
encourage and promote the study of the Holocaust.
Hope
Scholarships and Lifetime Learning Credits
$1,500 HOPE Scholarship to make the first two years
of college universally available. For students in the
first two years of college (or other eligible post-secondary
training), taxpayers will be eligible for a tax credit
equal to 100% of the first $1,000 of tuition and fees
and 50% of the second $1,000 (the amounts are indexed
for inflation after 2001). The credit will be available
on a per-student basis for net tuition and fees (less
grant aid) paid for college enrollment after December
31, 1997. The credit is phased out for joint filers
between $80,000 and $100,000 of income, and for single
filers between $40,000 and $50,000 (indexed after 2001).
The credit can be claimed in two taxable years (but
not beyond the year when the student completes the first
two years of college) with respect to any individual
enrolled on at least a half-time basis for any portion
of the year.

The Horatio Alger Association seeks to assist students

Science Talent Search
Since 1942, Science Service has made dreams come true
through the Science Talent Search (STS). Intel is the
sponsor of this nationwide competition—America's oldest
and most highly regarded pre-college science contest.
Eligible students include high school seniors in the
United States and territories, and American students
attending school abroad. Each year, over 1500 students
accept the challenge of completing an entry for the
Intel Science Talent Search, with finalists competing
for the top prize, a $100,000 scholarship.

Corps Scholarships
The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit,
tax exempt corporation of volunteer men and women dedicated
to providing financial assistance in the form of scholarships
for higher education to deserving sons and daughters
of United States Marines and children of former Marines,
with particular attention being given to children whose
parent was killed or wounded in action.

Army Emergency Relief (AER) is a private non-profit
organization with the primary mission of providing financial
assistance to Army Soldiers and their dependents in

Fund administered by AER was established in 1976 as
a secondary mission to help Army families with the costs
of post secondary undergraduate level education, vocational
training, and preparation for acceptance by military
service academies for their dependent children.

Seamless Mobility College Competition
Available to undergraduate or graduate students
who are 18 years of age or older and are attending a
college, university or trade show in the 50 United States
or Washington, DC. You must submit your most innovative
ideas about the future of seamless mobility to answer
to the consumer demand to live life wherever, whenever
and however. Submissions may be in the form of a short
story (fiction), essay/white paper (non-fiction), short
film, animated short film, comic strip or digital arts.
NAACP
Scholarship Program
In an effort to promote equal opportunity in education,
the NAACP annually offers the Earl G. Graves, Agnes
Jones Jackson, Louis Stokes, Lillian & Samuel Sutton,
Roy Wilkins and Hubertus W. V. Willems scholarships.
National
Institutes of Health Scholarships for Undergraduate
Scholarships
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate
Scholarship Program offers scholarship awards to students
from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to
careers in biomedical, behavioral and social science
health-related research. The program is sponsored by
the NIH, one of the world’s foremost centers for biomedical
research and research training. The scholarships pay
for tuition and reasonable educational and living expenses
up to $20,000 per academic year. In return, recipients
are obligated to serve as paid employees in NIH research
laboratories during the summer and after graduation.
In addition to financial assistance, the scholarship
program offers invaluable training and mentoring, as
well as practical experience in a state-of-the-art research
setting.
National
Merit Scholarships
Each year a total of some 55,000 high school students
are honored in the National Merit Program and the National
Achievement Program and more than 10,500 of the most
outstanding participants receive scholarships worth
a total of $50 million for college undergraduate study.
National
Society of Black Engineers
NSBE offers several corporate scholarships
to students each year. The scholarship website is also

Scholarships

The College and Career Awareness Scholarship Clearinghouse
created through an initiative of the Office of Secondary
Education offers scholarship snapshots and application
preparatory information.
Presidential
Freedom Scholarships
The Presidential Freedom Scholarships promote student
service and civic engagement. These scholarships, funded
in part by the Corporation for National and Community
Service, a federal agency, recognize high school students
for outstanding leadership in service to their community
and neighbors. High school students across the nation
are solving the problems in their communities, demonstrating
compassion for others, and servicing those who need
support. The President has called upon Americans to
serve their communities and the nation. Many students
have answered that call to service. Outstanding high
school students are eligible for recognition through
a Presidential Freedom Scholarship.
Prestigious
Scholarships
This page provides information about prestigious scholarships.
Prestigious scholarships are among the most well-known
and most lucrative scholarships, but are also the most
competitive. They are national or international in scope.
Winning one of these awards marks you with a stamp of
excellence that can open doors. Some of these awards
require nomination by the student's school and do not
accept applications directly from students.

Rhodes
Scholarships at Oxford
The Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest international fellowships,
were initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902,
and bring outstanding students from many countries around
the world to the University of Oxford. The first American
Scholars were elected in 1904.
American Rhodes Scholars are selected through a decentralized
process by which regional selection committees choose
32 Scholars each year from among those nominated by
selection committees in each of the fifty states. Through
December 2000, applicants from more than 300 American
colleges and universities had been selected as Rhodes
Scholars. In most years, a Rhodes Scholar is selected

The Ron Brown Scholar Program is a national program
that awards scholarships to academically talented, highly
motivated African American high school seniors who intend

Scholarship Fund
The Roothbert Fund was created in 1958 by Albert and
Toni Roothbert to help men and women in need of financial
aid to further their education. The principal focus
of The Fund is its Scholarships Program, through which
it makes grants for undergraduate or graduate study
at accredited colleges or universities. Scholarships
may only be applied to study at an accredited institution
based in the United States. The Fund seeks candidates
who are "motivated by spiritual values," and works to
foster fellowship among them.

ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) and Naval ROTC
Programs offered by the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and
the Air Force, train qualified young men and women to
become officers in those services upon graduation from

the Coast Guard. The good news is, ROTC is available

U.S., both those that host ROTC units or detachments
and those with cross-enrollment agreements with them.

Athletic scholarships for undergraduate student-athletes

funded through the NCAA membership revenue distribution.
